Modern Foreign Languages

Here at ORTU Hassenbrook Academy we are truly passionate about teaching languages and the positive impact that language learning can have on student’s lives.

We endeavour to engage students in every element of language learning and inspire them to go on to not only succeed in exams and studies, but to develop an awareness that languages can enable opportunities professionally and personally in their futures.

“One language sets you on a corridor for life, two languages open every door along the way” – Frank Smith.

Our MFL Department is an innovative and creative team with a strong ethos to inspire students to learn languages. Here at Hassenbrook we have a focus on learning of Spanish through KS3 and KS4.

Our carefully considered curriculum gives students the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in exams and enables them to use languages beyond school life. We use the innovative Extensive Processing Instruction method of teaching languages which aims at fluency and mastery in a broad range of topics. Through our expert teaching, we endeavour to inspire students to love languages and give them a broader understanding of other countries and cultures. We are constantly developing our methods to help students progress and use innovative strategies to support on their language-learning journey.

KS3

At Key Stage 3, students learn Spanish. At this stage we prioritise development of language skills with links to culture and identity throughout. Students are encouraged to communicate and develop confidence to use their acquired language skills. Students begin to develop key language skills to be able to progress to GCSE level.

By the end of KS3 students should have developed:

• Receptive skills: An understanding of spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources

• Productive skills: The ability to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

• The ability to write at varying lengths, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.

• An appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

KS4

At Key Stage 4, students have the opportunity to choose Spanish. Our aim for our GCSE students is to develop key language skills and techniques and build on their cultural awareness, broadening their understanding of the world around them. Student will build their confidence to be able to be successful in exams but also to become proficient Spanish speakers.

By the end of KS4 students should have developed:

• A better understanding of the world around them

• The knowledge and application of a wide range of vocabulary and grammatical structures

• The confidence to express themselves orally and in written form

• A confident understanding of the MFL curriculum

• The ability to perform to the best of their abilities in the national examinations

• The desire to discover even further the world they live in and an understanding of cultures other than their own
