Duke Of Edinburgh Award Scheme

On offer to all students in Years 9 to 11 is the Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme with three levels that lead to bronze, silver or gold awards. It is the world's leading youth scheme and is a recognised mark of achievement, respected by employers worldwide. We know that it is a life-changing experience for our young people providing them with an opportunity to discover new interests and talents and also gives them tools to develop essential skills for life and work.

With assistance from adult leaders, students select and set objectives in each of the following areas:

  • Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community.
  • Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.
  • Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
  • Expedition: planning, training for, and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad.
  • At gold level, students must do an additional fifth residential section, which involves staying and working away from home for five days, doing a shared activity.

“D of E gives you the chance to explore and become independent. It allows you to experience new things and form new friendships, it has helped me become more confident and I have enjoyed every part of it. The skills we’ve learned will help us in the future and last us a lifetime. It has given me the opportunity to grow, be able to give back to my community and helped me to develop and expand my horizons.”
Amaree - Bronze & Silver award holder 2019

“Completing D of E Bronze & Silver has been two of the most amazing experiences of my life. I have gained so many life skills, most importantly for me independence, it has also helped me to become more confident. Completing both awards has helped me give back to my community by volunteering and learning new skills. I am looking forward to the challenge of commencing D of E Gold with the school.”
Amelia – Bronze and Silver Award Holder / Gold Participant 2019

“Two of my daughters have both achieved Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Fortunately they were both offered the opportunity to participate in such a worthwhile programme. Both thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience from camping to surviving on food they cooked themselves. Learning new skills and volunteering work. From a parents’ perspective I am extremely proud in what they have both achieved, the level of support that Hassenbrook Academy has given them, has been amazing. Next year my eldest daughter is hoping to join the Police Force and I know that she will stand head and shoulders above many applicants with the same qualifications because not everyone can say they have achieved Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards. I am hoping that both girls continue to complete their Gold Award; at present they are concentrating on their A levels and GCSEs in 2020.”
Mrs Blake – Parent of Emily and Molly
